Club Brugge Dominate Marseille in Commanding Champions League Victory
In a one-sided affair at the neutral venue, Club Brugge KV cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Marseille in their UEFA Champions League group stage encounter. The Belgian champions were simply too strong for their French counterparts, outperforming them in nearly every statistical category.
The home side took the lead in the 4th minute through a well-taken finish from Makhete Diakhon, who was set up by Aleksandar Stankovic. Brugge doubled their advantage just 7 minutes later, as Ruud Vermant found the net, again with an assist from Stankovic. The Serbian midfielder was the orchestrator-in-chief, creating 2 clear-cut chances for his teammates in the opening exchanges.
Marseille struggled to gain a foothold in the game, managing just 9 shots on goal compared to Brugge's 11. Jorge Sáenz's side also completed only 87% of their passes, while the home team's accuracy rate was a more modest 77%. This disparity in possession and passing efficiency was a key tactical factor in Brugge's dominance.
The victory was sealed in the 79th minute when Stankovic capped off a fine individual display by scoring Brugge's third goal, assisted by Christian Forbs. Marseille simply had no answer to the fluidity and cohesion of the Belgian champions, who fully deserved the three points.
Club Brugge KV defeated Marseille 3–0 at the stadium in UEFA Champions League League Stage - 8. M. Diakhon (4'), R. Vermant (11'), A. Stankovic (79') scored.
