Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the Bundesliga, with the visitors twice coming from behind to salvage a point.
Dortmund raced into a two-goal lead through a penalty from Emre Can and a strike from Maximilian Beier, but Sasa Kalajdzic's brace brought Stuttgart level before the break. Dortmund thought they had regained the lead through Serhou Guirassy, only for the goal to be chalked off by VAR. Kalajdzic then completed his hat-trick in the 90th minute to earn Stuttgart a deserved share of the spoils, after Karim Adeyemi had put Dortmund back in front late on.
The tactical key to Dortmund's success was their ability to exploit the spaces in behind Stuttgart's high line. Beier's goal came after he made a clever run in behind the defense to latch onto a through ball. However, Dortmund failed to maintain their defensive discipline, allowing Stuttgart's attackers to find pockets of space between the lines and repeatedly get in behind. This tactical naivety ultimately cost Dortmund two points, as Kalajdzic ruthlessly punished their lack of organization.
For Stuttgart, the introduction of Tiago Tomas in the second half was a game-changing move. The substitute's energy and movement caused Dortmund's backline all sorts of problems, creating the space for Kalajdzic to thrive. This tactical tweak from Stuttgart coach Pellegrino Matarazzo was the key to his side's comeback.
